A good-looking front door is important and is crucial to boosting your home’s value.  But realtor.com says before you choose a new paint color, keep in mind the color you choose will tell prospective buyers a lot about you.  

VIOLET

realtor.com quotes environmental psychologist Sally Augustin of Design With Science.  Yes, violet is a color some home owners choose for their front door.  But Augustin says people often think of royalty when they see this color and purple is “linked to sophistication.”  The expectations are already high for the interior decor.  The key is making sure to pick the right shade of purple.   

ORANGE

The psychologist says this bright shade can mean different things depending on the type of home.  It’s also one of the cheapest colors.   As a result, an orange door can send the message that “I’m cheap or weird.”  But if the inside interior is tastefully done, an orange front door might be a nice complement.  

 

WHITE

This is the most common color for front doors.  realtor.com says the color suggests you might be a neat freak but also “indicates sterility, cleanliness, and simplicity.”  It might also make visitors worry about making a mess.  

 

YELLOW

If you want to stand-out, painting your front door yellow is the way to go.  It not only makes an impression, yellow is “linked to optimism and extraversion.”  Inside, guests will expect you to deliver with sunny rooms and all around cheerful decor.  Do it tastefully and not cover the entire house with the color.   Otherwise, “it can indicate irrationality and anxiety.”

 

BLUE

Painting your front door a bright blue will invite visitors since the color is linked to calmness and trust according Augustin.  

 

GREEN 

Prosperity and wealth is associated with a green front door but its natural appeal can also mean serene and peaceful.  Augustin says don’t be afraid to pick a vivid green — anything more neutral might come across as bland. 

 

BLACK

If you’re a serious individual, then painting your front door black is the way to go.  The color is formal but against a colorful exterior, it can add some fun to your home.  Black can be glamorous if covered with a shiny veneer and can even make your home appear “safer and well-protected.”

 

WOOD

If painting isn’t your thing, you could go with unpainted wood on your front door.  Augustin says this “conveys a more relaxed atmosphere” and brings a welcoming rustic appeal.  Make sure, though, it goes with the decor in the neighborhood

 

RED

Red is linked with action and can make you appear ambitious.  If you don’t want to come across as too wild, but rather vibrant and exciting, paint your front door red. 

 

BROWN

Practical and brown go hand-in-hand.  But if your heart is set on this shade, Augustin recommends choosing a lighter, warmer, softer shade.
