Accessibility

For starters, you might want to consider a home without stairs.  Many luxury homes, though, do have elevators so you don’t need to limit yourself to a single-story home.  In multi-level homes, you always have the option of installing a stair lift down-the-road.  Or buy a home where the master bedroom is on the first floor.  If you end up needing a ramp, they can be pre-made or custom built for the home. 

 

Lighting

When looking to buy a home, look for a lot of natural light sources.  Once you move in, you’ll want to install a lot of fixtures, as well, even in closets and laundry rooms.  This helps to prevent chronic straining in eyes.  

 

Bathrooms

At some point, you’ll probably want to consider remodeling the bathroom in order to stay independent.  Curbless, walk-in tubs and showers are increasing in popularity.  But you’ll want to make sure the home you’re buying has a big enough bathroom that can accommodate this remodeling.  

 

Doorways

Make sure doorways are 28 to 32 inches wide so you can get mobility equipment in and out with ease.  You can always widen the doorway.  In many cases, the project only takes a few hours.  But experts say it’s easier in single-story homes since they pose fewer structural concerns.  

 

Kitchen

Look for good lighting and easy access from the cooking area to the refrigerator and sink.  Lower-level cabinets are also helpful or pullout shelves.  You might also want to consider a side-by-side refrigerator when you end up needing to replace it.  

 

Flooring

Wherever two types of flooring meet, it can create a tripping hazard or a barrier to a wheelchair.  At some point, you’ll want to level-out the flooring or install new flooring.  

 

Maintenance

You might want to consider a maintenance free condo or home so you won’t have to do yard work.  If you enjoy landscaping, ensure there’s easy access to the backyard or even a garden.
